Get carpets, upholstery, and curtains or draperies professionally cleaned, or look for DIY options. Rent a steam cleaner or invest in your own -- there are a variety of affordable steamer/vacuum combos that you can use again and again. If you have pets, choose a steamer with a special setting for pet hair and stains.

Don’t forget your bed – mattresses, pillows, and comforters could also use a good refresh. Have pets? Invest in new pet beds or wash removable covers then put them outside in the sun to freshen up. This is also a good time to go through your linen closet and replace worn out towels and bedding. Finally, if your throw pillows are a little stale, put them in the dryer with some tennis balls and tumble to get rid of dust, then put them outside to air out.
